News From the Garden

I am now getting several things out of the garden. First time this year I am now getting mature onions which had been planted over three months ago. I am also getting more large carrots that also have been in the ground over three months. And the latest...now I am about to get some ripe watermelons which have been growing very fast, can't wait to try these in about two weeks..

Large carrots, very tasty

And watermelons as big as basketballs..

News of the Weird

Now I built a hen house that has several lay boxes in it, but what do my chickens do? They all want to lay in the same box all the time. I have even seen them walking around whining because another chicken is occupying the popular lay box. And to go further, I have even looked in there and found two hens occupying the same popular lay box. They will not try another nesting box, but will do anything to get into the one popular box. So much for my weird chickens..

In just a few hours, the favorite nesting box fills up..

These Ladies love the veggies and I get more eggs

Four of the Ladies coming to the fence, got to round up the rest..

Plan for the Day

I have not done any bow shooting in months, so think I will do some target practice today, I don't have any arrows but the sharp game arrows so I will just use them (got seven of these hunting sharp tipped arrows at good will for $10). Target is on a wood pallet against a tree. Later will recline on the front porch and drink a couple beers and later built a fire in the new fire pit I made in front of the cabin and cook some dinner, maybe fry up some squash and some fresh fish.. Yeah, this is the life...

 Bow + arrows ready
Fire pit in front of cabin
Hmm..squash ready to be cut
Fresh rainbow trout ready for the fire

Another Tropical Storm

With a tropical storm predicted to head right over me today and tomorrow, predictions are for another 8 to 12 inches of rain. Add the wind to the mix, and time will tell how my property fares. With over 32 inches of rain this year here, El Nino is bringing more. The area floods easily but I live on a hill, but much of my land streaches down hill, but with the wind and rain, I will see how I get through this.

Crazy Tomato Plants

Time to pick more tomatoes as I watch these tomato plants growing over 6 feet high, don't know where they are going to go from here...

The Ladies

I have found what these chickens like...I mix some cut greens with a cut up tomato and then add a slice of crumbled up bread and they go nuts! They of course still get their seed and corn feed and have a large pen to run around in in search for bugs.. Now time to raid the nest boxes for eggs..

They love the veggies

The Privy

The Outhouse/Privy is now finished, made from free pallets and scrap wood, it sits near the guest cabin. It works on the principle of using a bucket, mixing with sawdust and burial in a trench in the woods. Remove one bucket when ready and replace with another. Nothing like living off the grid..

Tomatoes Anyone?

The tomatoes are filling up the fridge, picking them everyday now so may have to start canning them, dreaming up everything I can eat with a tomato, even the "Ladies" like em (that would be the chickens!)..
