Garden News

The no rain period goes on here with nothing but a hot sun beating down on everything, and so my garden suffers and no amount of watering can change that. Some leaves of plants turning brown from the sun beating down on them every day now going on over a month with projections well into August. Watermelon is getting it the worse, I am now covering them. Will cut this one tomorrow after a night in the fridge. Tomatoes are still alive but not growing much. Carrots are flowering, but even they have some brown in their leaves. Well, that is the weather extremes of today..

This Melon obviously has burn marks from the intense sun

This watermelon cut up, despite being burned by the sun, it was GREAT!

Covering melons with this sheet during the heat of the day

Trying to keep the tomato plants green and alive

Another Knife

Picked up this blade made out of pewter at a garage sale and made this knife out if it. I think I will offer it as a decorative piece.

The Heat

For the whole month of July, there has been nothing but heat and sun the entire month, no clouds and no rain. With the heat, I can tell it is affecting the garden and just baking the plants. Fortunately I have a well that I have used to water the garden to save it from dying, however, the sun keeps hitting the garden from sun up to sun down. Now I can only hope the weather pattern changes next month..

The Watermelon is In

Decided it was time to try some of the big watermelon from the garden, it was juicy and ripe, found out how to tell when they are ripe and ready - when the stems start to die on them. Tomato plants are still going at over 6 feet high and up over the fence (I have to reach over to get some of them, think I have picked well over fifty by now). The heat has been baking my garden every day this month with no rain since over three weeks, have to water every day by hand. I can see how the heat is affecting the plants even with my watering..

My New Neighbor

I discovered this new neighbor of mine just to the right outside my front door to my deck. This large spider only comes out at night so I cannot get a good view of him, so I took this photo with flash at night. If he gets some of these mosquitoes that come out at night, he will have earned his stay.

Garden News

As any day has shown, I never know what I am going to get out of the garden, today I took out a 9 inch long yellow squash along with this massive 3 legged carrot that took me 5 minutes to dig out of the ground. There is never a dull day in the garden..

New Knifework

I have been back in my Studio doing some work on stone making blades and using bone from deer and elk antler to make daggers and knives that mirror work done back in the 19th century. I have put a shape edge on these to make them functional like they were made by native Americans. All blades were made from varying kinds of stone.

Another Pallet project

I decided to take one of my pallets and make a wine rack, actually I was able to make two wine racks from the one pallet. I am always thinking of things to do with my free pallets, and there is nothing like recycling these free pallets into something I can use!

Sitting Out on My New Deck

I was sitting out on my new deck enjoying some good food, drink, and company, and watching some neighborhood fireworks. My neighbors went all out with rockets and putting on a great show which I was not expecting as I this is my first time seeing it, nice to see it all from my deck at my cabin..

Pallet Deck

I made this deck on the front of my main cabin out of free pallets (given away by a local country store) and stone blocks (found on my land). It cost me nothing but labor. You have to love projects like this..
